Come participate in a full day of hands-on instruction by industry experts in a small, one-on-one, classroom setting. These workshops will provide professionals and academics with the skills and knowledge to work with cutting edge technologies in a fast-paced and intensive environment.

This workshop will focus on the underlying concepts and mechanisms for creating performance-based parametric envelope systems using Grasshopper for Rhino5. Curriculum will follow a case study format, emphasizing workflows for professional practice. Workshop attendees will learn the fundamentals of parametric design as it applies to the building industry, concept development using parametric tools, and how to creatively and effectively use data as a design parameter.
We will review major updates to the Grasshopper interface, including the connection to the Rhino5 viewports and creating user-defined components. We will conclude with a focused look at Clusters – the most powerful workflow for compiling, sharing, and protecting modules within your definitions.
In recent years, the AEC industry has seen many examples of complex facade envelope designs. This workshop will explore different techniques for the rationalization of envelope surfaces for efficient fabrication, using a variety of plugins for Grasshopper. Participants will learn fundamental concepts of facade panelization, and optimization thereof, using Grasshopper’s optimization plugin Galapagos.
After covering a number of examples for facade optimization using Galapagos, we will teach a variety of advanced panelization techniques, using the dynamic relaxation plugin Kangaroo. The participants will also utilize the TT Toolbox plugin, which will allow them to track the progress of the design various iterations with Excel.
Dynamo is an open source graphical programming language for Autodesk Revit and Vasari. Dynamo can be used to customize a wide variety of computational design processes within Revit’s Building Information Modeling environment. This workshop will explore how Dynamo can be used as a took for studying parametric facades. Participants will learn how to use Dynamo for generating facade geometry, deploying Revit families, utlizing analysis information, and managing complex parameters.
This workshop will explore the relationship between building envelope performance and architectural design decision making. Course content will include a brief introduction to the fundamentals of building envelope performance evaluation, as well as practical weather data analysis. Through a series of hands-on exercises, this workshop will walk participants through an iterative process of understanding the problem, making design decisions, setting up parametric models, running environmental analysis, and drawing conclusions from the results.
The latest version of the environmental analysis plugins in addition to example files will be provided to attendees.
Note: Each student is responsible for bringing their own laptop and the software downloaded as per instructions.
Note: Information regarding software version and service release will be communicated upon registration via each instructor along with additional information pertaining to pre-workshop preparation.
