Presenters Steven Shatswell, Project leader at Krueck Sexton Partners and Bryan Howard, Senior Project Director at Thornton Tomasetti, will discuss the complexities of renovating a complex civic building, including replacing all glazed exterior assemblies with high-performance, bird-safe glazing while preserving the existing precast-and-granite cladding. This renovation included protective design upgrades to improve occupant safety and was led by thermal analysis and carbon reduction strategies that enhanced operational energy efficiency and elevated both user and public experiences while retaining the original aesthetic intent, all while keeping the building operational and occupied during the renovation process.

This presentation session will explore prioritizing a problem-solving ecosystem to navigate constraints as opportunities and advocate for design excellence. Through the lens of AIA’s framework for design excellence, BNIM Architects Joyce Raybuck, John Collier, and Josh Harrold will present three project case studies demonstrating high-performance facade design that successfully addresses challenges of climate, site, program, and community context. Presenters will share lessons learned and key strategies in implementing technical solutions for environmental and programmatic challenges; advocating for facade design excellence in client collaboration; and designing facades in dialogue with community context and urban conditions.
