When designing the facade of a home, climate response and deference to the landscape can provide opportunities for creative solutions that are resilient, artful, and inspiring. For this discussion, Jenny Trumble of CCY Architects will share insight into the facade strategy of a recently completed home in Colorado. This remote residence is located deep in the mountains of Colorado at an altitude of 10,000 feet, where groves of Engelmann spruce trees reflect off of the home’s copper facade. Inspired by the owners’ interest in biology, the design reinterprets the DNA sequence of the surrounding trees into a facade design with mesmerizing effect, deeply rooted within its context.

Hydro is the last of three buildings to be completed for the Colorado State University (CSU) SPUR program, a science and research campus devoted to the study of water. Accordingly, the facade of Hydro mimics the flow of a river by means of a curvilinear metal-scrim sunshade. Jennifer Cordes, of Hord Copland Macht, and Will Babbington, of Studio NYL, will share details regarding the specification of perforated shade structure as well as the technical challenges related to the installation of rounded facade elements.

This roundtable will explore important shifts in the building envelope industry: certification and accreditation. Our expert panelists will share information on the developments in the building enclosure commissioning process and the many competing standards for specialized enclosure credentialing such as IIBEC, BECxP, ASTM, CPH and others). Drawing on their expertise, panelists will provide insights into the important role these standards play and the reasoning for their further development.

Chad Mitchell of Meridian 105 Architecture, with Daryn Hosiassohn of White Construction Group, will present the Berkeley Hotel project, recently completed in Northwest Denver. A layered façade composed of brick screening and a concrete exoskeleton offers visual access to the streetscape but also provides pockets of privacy. The multifunctional brick screens also create circulation boundaries and provide shading of afternoon sunlight.

The pair will present background on the selection, detailing, and construction of the brick screens and structural concrete exoskeleton. The presentation will dive into the technical aspects of the brick design, will explore the code applicability to the screening elements, and the construction and field challenges overcome during installation.
