DIALOG has used mass timber and the vernacular building practices of the First Nation’s people to design an office building for the First Nations Health Authority in North Vancouver. More specifically, the six-story structure emulates the plank houses of the Coast Salish people. Project architects from DIALOG will present the buildings post-and-beam timber structure, the implementation of fire protection requirements, and the prefabrication process.

This session looks at how architecture is imperative in forming the solution to achieving the high-performance low carbon buildings that Canada and the world require to meet sustainability targets. Expert panelists will compare and contrast projects from different regions across Canada, both designed to passive house standards with heavily insulated envelopes and constructed from carbon sequestering materials, such as mass timber.

Brian Hubbs, principal at RDH, will present the firm’s work on upgrades to Vancouver’s Museum of Anthropology which are specifically targeting improved seismic resiliency. Hubbs will share the design and installation of a modern structural glass facade and the replacement of skylights within the building. This work was conducted in a manner which is respectful to the original building, which was designed by Arthur Erickson in the 1970s.

This session will review the UBC Gateway project which is leveraging prefabrication as part of its delivery.

UBC Gateway is a high-performance academic building that is being designed to meet LEED v4 BD+C Gold and CaGBC’s Zero Carbon Building – Design Certification. Being a structural hybrid composed of glulam, steel and concrete, most of the main building structure and façade is fully prefabricated off site. Both hybrid floor structure and façade were designed through a highly collaborative design-assist process.
