Canada’s Ken Soble Tower is certified as the world’s largest residential Passive House EnerPHit retrofit. Forging new ground in North America, the 18-storey affordable seniors housing tower serves as a model for converting our aging housing to a more low-carbon, resilient future. ERA Architects will detail how this ambitious project was realized, and how it is already informing the next generation of deep retrofits, with new explorations in prefabrication, high-speed installation, and working in occupied buildings with vulnerable residents.

Doron Meinhard and Michael Conway, associate partners at Hariri Pontarini Architects, will share two recent projects, describing how their approach to building skin design shapes the character of the public realm, while also maintaining environmental responsibility. Using depth, material, craft, and light to express the aspirations of place, the inventive, high-performance facades of the Tom Patterson Theatre and Building E at The Well in Toronto reimagine the traditional envelope to deliver higher sustainability metrics, cost efficiency – and soul. In their work, Hariri Pontarini Architects combine technical knowledge and practical expertise with an experiential design approach, creating a unique identity and visitor experience—both inside and out.

Presenters from MJMA Architecture + Design, Pomerleau Construction, and RDH Building Science will present the Academic Wood Tower at the University of Toronto. Developed by the team of Patkau Architects, MJMA, and Blackwell Structural Engineers the project is poised to become the tallest academic mass timber structure in Canada. The session will cover the sustainability features of the building’s facade, which utilizes minimal spans of triple glazing, as well as opaque walls supported by a carbon-sequestering timber structure to achieve extremely high performance metrics.
