20 Mass Ave project is a unique mixed-use development with a variety of facade typologies. It’s main programs include the The Royal Sonesta Hotel, new office space, retail, restaurant, and an amenities penthouse. These programs wrap around a 10-story central atrium that bring your eye upward towards the sky. The sleek minimalistic glazing cascades downwards and reflects its surroundings. Janki Bhatia and Andrew Graham, the project architects from Leo A Daly will walk us through the story of design intent. Paul Totten, the facade consultant will get into the knitty-gritty details of the facade and detailing, and Thilo Wilhelmsen of DPR Construction will share insights into the collaboration of completing this exemplary adaptive reuse story.
10:30 – 10:45 PM
This roundtable with leading building materials manufacturers will discuss the advanced materials newly available and just around the corner. Learn how architects can work together with manufacturers to build with the latest, most up-to-date technologies, code requirements, and products, and hear what’s next for the industry.
10:45 – 11:15 AM

Jason Danielson, GSA’s Building Envelope Leader will present on ensuring building envelope quality and performance. High-performing and resilient envelopes are key parts to the GSA’s stewardship of federal properties. Jason will provide details into the GSA’s approach to envelopes, and the latest updates on the many programs such as the P100, GSA BECx, Design and Construction Excellence that were created to better work with architects and contractors.

Since its founding in 1888, National Geographic has called the District of Columbia its home. Over generations the headquarters on 16th street and subsequent campus expanded to better serve their mission; “use the power of science, exploration, education, and storytelling to illuminate and protect the wonder of our world”. BASE CAMP is the next step in this evolution and includes a reimagined central plaza, new entry pavilion and an interior/exhibit renovation that transforms the existing quiet campus into vibrant and dynamic destination.
Currently under construction and delivering in late 2025, Tom Corrado, Associate Principal at Hickok Cole, will lead a panel that offers a sneak peek into several of the innovative solutions. The panel includes Mark Ramirez, Principal and Project Director at Hickok Cole, Colin Davis, Associate and Project Architect at Hickok Cole and Brian Lantz, Project Executive at Hitt Contracting.
It is not often that “wonder” is a requirement for a project team! In order to match the intent of National Geographic’s mission statement and to embody the spirt of exploration, education, and storytelling, the design and construction highlights multitude state-of-the-art building technologies, including a spectacular nighttime show on the building façade made possible by jumbo- size, electrochromic glass. To help with the overall spatial composition of the pavillion design in the plaza, the team used parametric modeling design technology in conjunction with a Solid Surface “eyebrow” to create a dynamic and balanced building façade.

Leading construction firms of the area will convene to discuss the trajectory of construction and fabrication, including new trends in technology, sustainability, and circularity. As a significant driver of energy consumption and operational carbon, the building envelope is at the forefront of every green-building project. Led by local experts in the field, this roundtable will propose practical solutions for envelope efficiency which attendees will be able to implement in their own practice. Topics will include the use of high-performance cladding and alternative materials, advanced systems for temperature regulation, as well as strategies for sustainable sourcing.

The Virginia Tech Innovation Campus Academic Building (ICAB) is a 300,000gsf computer science/ computer engineering building that will be the centerpiece of a new Virginia Tech campus in Northern Virginia. The ICAB massing and facade is fundamentally heliomorphic, shaped by solar movement for daylighting, heat gain reduction, and photovoltaic power generation. The building mass is faceted, informed by a generative algorithm that utilized AI processes for analysis. Each facet was optimized for daylighting, glare, views, heat gain, PV power generation, and urban form. The building is currently under construction and will open in late 2024.
