TK Elevator’s Innovation and Qualification Center (The IQC) — which includes the tallest elevator test tower in the United States — brings a national hub for innovation and talent to the heart of Atlanta’s Battery. The project features a fire-rated glass podium and a transparent facade up the elevator tower.
The three-building complex featuring the IQC accommodates a diverse mix of users including local STEM students, business developers, corporate executives, customers, and employees. Soaring to 420 feet, the elevator test tower’s transparent skin and open ceilings invite the public to witness innovation at work.
Varying facade typologies and systems, a commitment to transparency, and masterful design make this an exciting place to work and learn. The team from Gensler, Walter P Moore, and Brasfield & Gorrie will discuss the development of this complex in an engaging dialogue.

The design team from EOA in Nashville will present the recently completed Smyrna Ready Mix Headquarters and its expressive use of concrete and glazing to create a memorable figure that exudes the identity of the company, and explores a unique design approach.
The vertical layering of the five-stories of corporate offices mimics the rhythms found in the adjacent stone quarry used by the company. Full glazing was desired to take advantage of the 800-acre vista as well as showcase the structural components. The building’s slender exposed concrete columns and curving shapes showcase the concrete material on which the company has been built. In addition, the cantilevered post-tension slabs show the strength and sculptural possibilities of concrete.

This roundtable with leading building materials manufacturers will discuss the advanced materials newly available and just around the corner as they respond to changes in code, safety, and other requirements. Learn how architect’s can work together to build with the latest, most up-to-date technologies and projects, and hear what’s next for the industry.

Leaders from NELSON will present two mixed-use projects that define their community and express an excitement in their variety and programs.
The Battery in Atlanta, a destination district deftly deploys multi-material façade systems—pairing glass, steel, and masonry—to create a sense of place that pairs a mixed use development alongside the new Atlanta Braves Stadium, Truist Park. The facades were designed to vary materiality in a way that is reminiscent of older American stadium districts.
The Battery is contrasted with Fenton, a mixed use project in Cary, North Carolina. Fenton’s design approach to facade materials created a dynamic face of a community that blends residential, commercial, and entertainment for a cohesive envelope approach.

The days of good façade design being measured on a purely aesthetic scale are long gone. While aesthetics are still an important factor, energy and environmental performance are shaping the future of facade design. For a façade design to be considered successful, it must play a vital role in reducing the energy impact of a building, and contribute in meaningful ways to building occupant comfort and well-being. Join us for a conversation on how building envelope aesthetics are shifting in response to new materials, code requirements, and client requests for strong facade design that meets the challenges.
