Friday, October 7 – Times in CST
8:30 – 9:30 AM
9:40 – 10:40 AM
Recent advancements in facade design and material engineering have created major improvements in building envelope energy performance. While this has had a direct positive impact on operational energy use, major improvements will be required in order to meet the coming net zero energy targets. Panelists will discuss facade design and engineering trends that offer both challenges and potential solutions on the road to greater sustainability, including enhanced solar protection, thermal comfort, natural ventilation, and low-carbon materials.
8:55 – 9:00 AM
10:45 – 11:15 AM
9:00 – 10:00 AM
This roundtable with leading building materials manufacturers will discuss the advanced materials newly available and just around the corner. Learn how architects can work together with manufacturers to build with the latest, most up-to-date technologies and projects, and hear what’s next for the industry.
12:05 – 1:00 PM
1:00 – 1:30 PM
New buildings in the Lincoln Yards development and Fulton Market areas of Chicago offer insights into market trends that are shaping our urban fabric. New facades are reshaping these parts of the city, shifting where and how Chicagoans work. These case studies will explore how designers at Gensler and developers at Sterling Bay are working together to achieve envelopes that wrap programmatically unique buildings, offering roadmaps for collaborative design work.
1:30 – 2:30 PM
The days of good façade design being measured on a purely aesthetic scale are long gone. While aesthetics are still an important factor, energy and environmental performance are shaping the future of facade design. For a façade design to be considered successful, it must play a vital role in reducing the energy impact of a building, and contribute in meaningful ways to building occupant comfort and well-being. Join us for a conversation on how building envelope aesthetics are shifting in response to new materials, code requirements, and client requests for environmentally stronger facades.
1:00 – 1:30pm
3:00 PM – 4:00 PM
4:00 – 4:30 PM
Mariusz Klemens and Juan M. Villafañe of Krueck Sexton Partners will present the International Square Food Hall, a case study for a naturally ventilated building in Washington DC. They will discuss the project background, main design drivers, and detailing, offering solutions for natural ventilation as needs for occupant comfort are changing.
