In this session, leaders across the AEC industry will explore how innovative applications of proven facade systems deliver measurable performance improvements across diverse building types. This session will explore the facade system as a potent field for transformative building change in the pursuit of carbon reduction and net zero emission goals.

10:30 – 11:00 AM
Architects and designers are increasingly seizing the opportunity to renovate and reclad existing buildings as a sustainable alternative to demolition and reconstruction by considering the existing structure as an asset to keep total embodied carbon to a minimum. This session will explore how updating the building’s envelope while retaining much of the original structure can establish a new identity in an innovative and thoughtful way. A key element of the renovation was the reconfiguration of the Pennsylvania Ave Façade – by replacing the Newseum’s predominately glass façade with a stately Tennessee Marble façade – the new building reestablishes its connection to the many prominent stone buildings on Pennsylvania Ave. Joined by the Structural Engineer and the head of the Tennessee Marble Quarry, this panel will discuss how selective exterior construction, and interior reconfiguration turned the renowned museum into a vibrant academic center for Johns Hopkins University.

11:00 – 11:30 AM
11:30 – 12:00 PM
In this panel, attendees will explore cutting-edge building envelope products and services that are revolutionizing the AEC industry. These innovations enhance energy efficiency, durability, and sustainability while pushing the boundaries of design and performance. Experts will discuss how advancements in materials, fabrication techniques, and digital tools are enabling architects, engineers, and contractors to work smarter, build better, and achieve their design visions with greater precision. These panelists will share their manufacturing expertise on technologies that contribute to meeting evolving building codes, improving occupant comfort, and reducing environmental impact, ultimately shaping the future of high-performance building envelopes.

12:00 – 12:30 PM
The distinct aluminum plating of Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy is an example of a unique design statement and a facade that is seamlessly integrated with the surrounding area. The question of balancing aesthetics and cost in high-performance envelopes must be answered on a range of logistical and technical fronts. The issue becomes even more complex when architects must navigate existing infrastructure and code restrictions. The McCourt School of Public Policy stands as an instructive example of how these obstacles can be surmounted.

12:30 – 1:30 PM
1:30 – 2:15 PM
Existing building conversions are accelerating across major markets, but façade systems are often the biggest technical constraint between concept and reality. This panel will dive into the real world challenges of converting office buildings to residential, hospitality, and other use types – from floor to floor heights, glazing performance, ventilation requirements, to structural limitations, waterproofing upgrades, energy code compliance, and cost implications. We’ll move beyond renderings and into what actually drives feasibility, where projects get value engineered, and how façade decisions ultimately shape what conversions succeed, stall, or become financially viable.

2:15 – 3:00 PM
This panel with leading building materials manufacturers will discuss the advanced materials newly available and just around the corner. Learn how architects can work together with manufacturers to build with the latest, most up-to-date technologies, code requirements, and products, and hear what’s next for the industry.

3:00 – 3:30 PM
3:30 PM – 4:15 PM
The SNF Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University is an active point of connection between the local community and students of the university and a magnificent example of site responsive cladding to accomplish design goals. Visual openness and a passive design strategy were key elements of the integration of the building into the surrounding landscape. This session will explore how the technical challenges architects at Ayers Saint Gross and Renzo Piano Building Workshop were overcome in the construction of the facade.

4:15 – 4:45 PM
The completion of the Bloomberg Student Center at Johns Hopkins University was a significant milestone on the path toward the future of sustainable buildings. A layered grouping of rectangular volumes composes the facade, which supports a system of nearly 1,000 photovoltaic panels. Presenters will revisit the challenges construction of the facade presented, and the use and future of mass timber for multi-functional higher education spaces.
