9:30 – 9:40 AM
9:45 AM – 10:15 AM
Steven Shatswell, project leader at Krueck Sexton Partners, and Bryan Howard, senior project director at Thornton Tomasetti, will discuss the intricacies of renovating a complex civic building, including replacing all glazed exterior assemblies with high-performance, bird-safe glazing while preserving the existing precast-and-granite cladding. This renovation included protective design upgrades to improve occupant safety and was led by thermal analysis and carbon reduction strategies that enhanced operational energy efficiency and elevated both user and public experiences while retaining the original aesthetic intent, and also keeping the building operational and occupied during the renovation process.

10:15 AM – 11:00 AM
Join Douglas Stockman of Helix Architecture & Design, Godfrey Riddle of Civic Saint, and Carleigh Pope of BNIM as they share the stories and transformative ideas related to facades, housing, and community development. Stockman will discuss The Crosswalks, a mixed-use development that seeks to support a community-driven revival of an underserved neighborhood, while Godfrey will present the vision behind Civic Saint, an innovative initiative that is building affordable housing using compressed earthen blocks. Together the group will examine how facade design can inspire and drive civic pride.

11:30 AM – 12:15 PM
This presentation session explores how architects can turn constraints into opportunities and advocate for design excellence by prioritizing problem solving. Through the lens of AIA’s framework for design excellence, BNIM Architects’ Joyce Raybuck, John Collier, and Josh Harrold will present three project case studies demonstrating high-performance facade design that successfully addresses challenges of climate, site, program, and community context. Presenters will share lessons learned and key strategies in implementing technical solutions for environmental and programmatic challenges; advocating for facade design excellence in client collaboration; and designing facades in dialogue with community context and urban conditions.

Table Talks is an opportunity to have a guided conversation with your peers in the Kansas City AEC community. During this 45-minute session, fellow attendees offer an excellent opportunity to exchange insights on facades, share design strategies, and collaboratively tackle complex challenges within a group dynamic. We hope this session will be surprising, engaging, and productive.
2:30 – 3:15 PM
This session pairs two new, high-performance projects that are responsive to their local context and climate. First, Emily Taylor of Hutton will share the award-winning Youngmeyer Field Station, a limestone-wrapped research hub for Wichita State University that is integrated into its prairie landscape. Next, Dan Maginn of Dake Wells Architecture will cover the firm’s design of the Merriam Plaza Library, a structure that is similarly embedded in the surrounding landscape, while also featuring a highly performative öko-skin cladding.

This spotlight presentation explores the facade of the Center for Missouri Studies—an elegant integration of material, place, and performance. Clad in locally-sourced Ste. Genevieve limestone, the exterior not only pays homage to Missouri’s geological heritage but also meets high standards of sustainability with a concealed sub-framing system that enhances durability and energy efficiency. Learn how this LEED Gold project, completed by Multistudio, uses timeless materials and thoughtful detailing to create a civic presence designed to endure for the next 100 years.
