Agenda
Symposium
Thursday, February 4
Times in EST
8:00 – 9:30 AM EST
9:30 – 9:40 AM
9:40 – 9:45 AM
9:45 – 10:15 AM
Florida and Los Angeles—based practice Brooks + Scarpa will kick off the day with a presentation of a new recreational facility in Pompano Beach. Mason Millner, project designer at Brooks + Scarpa, will discuss the design of the new structure’s eclectic facade, which consists of a street-facing elevation clad in a yellow aluminum screen contained within a cast-in-place shell of board-formed concrete. With its wrap-around porch typology and references to South Florida’s colorful modernism, the building continues the region’s vernacular traditions while also supporting the surrounding 10 acre park facility.
10:15 AM – 10:45 AM
In a recent Miami Herald article, it was revealed that scores of high-rises along South Florida’s coastline are subsiding, or slowly sinking into the earth. The piece relies on research conducted by Falk Amelung and his team at University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science. In this session, Amelung will summarize his team’s findings, which used Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) to detect subsidence in Miami’s barrier islands, and share relevant take-aways for AEC professionals.
10:45 – 11:15 AM
11:15 AM – 12:00 PM
Margi Glavovic Nothard, Founder and Design Director of Glavovic Studio, will share her work on Girls’ Club, an arts foundation in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Reusing an existing two-story masonry structure, the architects reclad the building with translucent resin panels that were attached through the application of a steel framing system to the original facade. Furthermore, the entire building is illuminated from below creating a shimmering veil across the exterior or a projection surface for outdoor events.
12:00 – 12:40 PM
In this panel, attendees will learn about the advanced building envelope products and services that are transforming the AEC industry. These advancements allow designers, engineers, and contractors to work smarter, build better, and realize their design intent.
12:40 – 1:40 PM
1:40 – 2:25 PM
Table Talks is an opportunity to have a guided conversation with your peers in the South Florida AEC community. During this 45-minute session, fellow attendees offer an excellent opportunity to exchange insights on facades, lessons learned in design and fabrication, and collaboratively tackle complex challenges within a group dynamic. We hope this session will be surprising, engaging, and productive.
2:25 – 3:00 PM
Jacqueline Gonzalez Touzet, founding partner of Touzet Studio, will present Grove Central, a mixed-use development adjacent to the Coconut Grove Metrorail Station. The project’s podium, wrapped in a perforated metal screen that conceals the parking garage and graphically displays the development’s name, incorporates forward-thinking strategies for resilience and sustainability.
The design features a rooftop and parking deck prepared for future solar installations, with battery storage rooms to support renewable energy infrastructure. A shady public plaza connects directly to the Underline, enhancing urban connectivity and encouraging walkability. Native plants integrated into the façade and inner courtyards contribute to climate adaptation by improving environmental performance and fostering a cooler, more sustainable microclimate.
In addition, Touzet will share two new on-the-boards projects that explore terracotta rainscreens as tools for flood-resistant materials and stormwater mitigation, emphasizing her studio’s dedication to resilient and sustainable design solutions tailored to South Florida’s unique challenges.
3:00 – 3:30 PM
3:30 – 4:10 PM
Learn about the impact of high-wind events on building envelopes in this expert panel featuring speakers from CPP Wind, a leading North American wind engineering consultancy, and Anesta Consulting, a local engineering firm. As the frequency of tropical storms, hurricanes, and tornados increases with climate change, architects will need to design facade systems that are resistant to these weather patterns.
4:10 – 5:00 PM
Jorge Garcia and Roger Grave de Perlta, CEO and Vice President of garciastromberg, will be joined by Chris Gandolfo, Senior Vice President at Tavistock Development, to present the recently-completed renovation of Pier Sixty Six, a luxury resort in Fort Lauderdale centered around an iconic mid-century tower. The site has been embellished with the addition of several new commercial and residential structures that were designed to compliment the expressive geometry of the original tower. This was achieved primarily through the building’s balconies, where a mixture of organic and rectilinear forms were used to distinguish individual buildings. Plunge pools were also included across the balcony spaces, an addition that required complex structural and technical coordination.
