On Toronto’s Bloor Street, the city’s luxury shopping hub, PARTISANS has crafted a new facade for the Royal de Versailles Rolex Boutique. The firm cut large limestone blocks using a CNC machine operating from a parametric script to create panels that resemble Rolex’s iconic metal watch bands, known as oyster bracelets. Alex Josephson, president of PARTISANS, will demonstrate how computational design was leveraged to carve an intricate texture into each panel, evocative of pleated fabric.

As early adopters of photovoltaic systems, Diamond Schmitt has for more than a decade led the field in the implementation of solar technology. In this session, leaders from the firm will look at the evolving use of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) in their work, sharing recent projects that demonstrate how to leverage the system without exceeding budget. The presenters will illustrate challenges that impede BIPV’s wider adoption, while also discussing how to overcome these barriers with successful trade communication and collaboration.

A new library along Dawes Road takes inspiration from the indigenous star blanket, featuring a folded metal facade with bold geometric pattern. Eladia Smoke, principal architect of the indigenous-led Smoke Architecture, and Michael Blois, senior associate at Perkins&Will and Sarah Bradley, from Toronto Public Library, will indicate how the envelope design aligns with the project’s community-focused mission and contains specific references to the history and culture of the Mississaugas people of Ontario. Additionally, details regarding the enclosure’s technical achievements, fabrication, and installation sequence will be explained to audience members.
