Join Page architect Larry Speck as he delves into the innovative design of the Museum of the Big Bend. Larry will explore the project’s unique facade, inspired by the natural landscape and cultural heritage of the region, and discuss the challenges and solutions involved in creating a modern architectural landmark that seamlessly blends with its surroundings. Don’t miss this insightful presentation on how thoughtful design can enhance and preserve cultural narratives.
10:30 - 11:15 AM
Presenters from Pelli Clarke, Permasteelisa, and DPR Construction will discuss the design of Block 185, a new office tower for Google in Downtown Austin. A sloped glass wall graces the Western elevation of the building, giving Block 185 its distinctive sail-like form and shading the southern elevation’s stepped terraces. Additional topics will include glass deflection, the specification of a bird safe frit, and reflectivity.
11:15 - 11:45 AM
11:45 AM - 12:15 PM
Arthur Andersson and Chris Wise, founders of Andersson / Wise, will present the Campsite at Shield Ranch, a new summer camp for underprivileged children located along Barton Creek. Using prefabricated systems, the firm designed a cluster of air-condition-less buildings that can be naturally ventilated via moveable screens. The architects will describe the technical challenges of building off the grid as well as their contextual approach to materiality and scale, which drove them to use locally-sourced cedar among other materials.
12:15 PM - 12:45 PM
Scott Ginder, founding principal and CEO of Forge Craft Architecture + Design will present Zilker Studios, an all-electric affordable housing development in Austin, Texas. Through extensive energy modeling, as well as the use of heavy insulation and moisture barriers behind its EIFS and aluminum facade, Zilker Studios has achieved a four star green building rating from Austin Energy.
Ginder will also compare the energy use intensity (EUI) of Forge Craft’s completed affordable housing projects, analyzing construction cost, operating cost, and performance of the installed systems.
12:45 - 1:45 PM
1:45 - 2:30 PM
Table Talks is an opportunity to have a guided conversation with your peers in the Austin AEC community. During this 45-minute session, fellow attendees offer an excellent opportunity to network, exchange insights on facades, and collaboratively tackle complex challenges within a group dynamic. We hope this session will be surprising, engaging, and productive.
2:30 PM - 3:15 PM
This panel with leading building materials manufacturers will discuss the advanced materials that are newly available and just around the corner. Learn how architects can work together with manufacturers to build with the latest, most up-to-date technologies, code requirements, and products, and hear what’s next for the industry.
3:15 - 3:45 PM
3:45 PM - 4:30 PM
