Alex has over 10 years of experience spanning a wide variety of project types, including office, convention centers, civic, and educational facilities. He engages between the design process and constructability, with a concentration in enclosure design and parametric workflows. As a creative problem-solver, Alex embraces change in pursuit of the most efficient workflow, unafraid of breaking tradition while striving to simplify design complexity for clients. On every project, he aims to contribute to the design and execution of complex, innovative enclosure systems, operating in a capacity beyond the breadth of traditional architectural practice. Derek Beaman, PE, SE, is a Senior Principal at Magnusson Klemencic Associates (MKA), an award- winning, 103-year-old, 155-person structural and civil engineering firm with offices in Seattle, Washington, and Chicago, Illinois. The leader of MKA’s Cultural and Convention Center Specialist Groups, Derek’s design portfolio includes new and existing-building renovations of over 60 convention center projects throughout the United States, Canada, China, India, and Qatar, with a combined cost of built work totaling almost $13 billion and a corresponding program area of more than 26 million square feet. Notable projects include expansions to the Seattle Convention Center, Las Vegas Convention Center, and New York City’s Javits Convention Center. With nearly 30 years of experience, Derek has developed a holistic understanding of a convention center’s structural and nonstructural systems, allowing him to identify and target the appropriate structural material quantities early in the design process and deliver on those initial targets throughout the project’s design. Derek has also collaborated with world-renowned architects to incorporate unique structural solutions into the Seattle Aquarium Ocean Pavilion, Olympic Sculpture Park, Seattle Central Library, Experience Music Project, and other award-winning projects.

Matt Aalfs, AIA, is the founding partner of BuildingWork, a Seattle architecture firm committed to the idea that architecture, design, and preservation can strengthen communities. Matt has expertise in the design of libraries, workplaces, housing, adaptive reuse, and historic preservation. Matt received a B.A. in Art from the University of California Santa Cruz, a Master of Architecture from the University of Washington, and has studied and taught architecture in Rome, Italy. Matt currently serves on the City of Seattle Design Commission as Architect Commissioner.

Earl has over 15 years of experience in the construction materials sector where he has been passionately supporting the facade design efforts of the architectural community in most of the major markets in the Western US and Western Canada.

John Rovi has nearly two decades of progressive experience in the fenestration and exterior façade industry. His roles in project management, facade consulting, and most recently in architectural business development for Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope® provide a wide breadth of industry expertise. John frequently presents technical yet easy-to-understand topics to the architectural community, engineers, developers, and owners. His audiences have ranged from 15 to 1,250 people spanning five countries. Over the past nine years, John has also written the blog “Mind Your Business” for USGlass Magazine, providing practical advice on sales, presentations, marketing, and how to drive success both personally and professionally.

Audrey McGarrell is the Project Manager of the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to bring objective, scientific information related to cool surfaces to critical discussions and informed decisions about the impacts of heat islands, extreme heat, and energy use in the built environment. Audrey oversees the CRRC Wall Product Rating Program and the organization’s Technical Committee. She also manages the CRRC’s social media presence and supports education and outreach efforts, with experience speaking at events for the paints and coatings, metal, and building enclosure consulting industries. She holds a B.A. in Spanish and a Master of Public Administration, and she is a LEED Green Associate.

Daaniya Iyaz (she/her) is the Extreme Heat Mitigation Strategy Specialist in the Department of Natural Resources and Parks, and this is her third role with the County. Her educational background, completed at UW, focused on the health impacts of extreme climate events. Daaniya has lived in King County for almost her entire life, and she is passionate about fostering climate adaptation strategies and resilience in local communities.

Nolan Ernotte is an Architectural Sales Representative at Window Tech, Inc., a full-service manufacturer’s representative that offers professional drafting, engineering, and design assistance for the building envelope. Window Tech represents Kawneer in Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and Hawaii, and supports them in their vision to pioneer architectural solutions to advance modern design with resilient, distinctive buildings that promote well-being. To this end, Nolan works closely with glazing contractors, general contractors, and architects to create a design that maintains the architect’s vision, accounts for the reality of construction, and is code compliant. He received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from California Polytechnic State University.

Tim Nass has nearly 30 years of experience in the architectural glazing industry. As the Vice President of Sales at SAFTI FIRST, leading USA-manufacturer of fire rated glass and framing systems, he brings his extensive knowledge and expertise when working closely with architects, consultants, general contractors and glaziers to deliver a code-compliant glazing solution that meets all the aesthetic, performance and budget requirements of the project. Tim also oversees SAFTI FIRST’s global network of architectural sales representatives.

Richard Green is Principal / Owner of Green Facades. He is a global expert in the area of facades and structural glass and his experience encompasses all stages of a building enclosure’s life-cycle. He received both Bachelor and Graduate Diploma in Structural Engineering from Monash University in Australia specializing in light-weight structures, and he has formal training in corrosion technology.

Richard’s specialty is the design and analysis of complex façade structures. He has been involved with a number of world leading and award-winning projects covering a wide range of building types. Curtainwall and high rise towers include Mahanakhon with OMA/ Ole Scherin, Shenzen Stock Exchange with OMA, and Brookfield Place in Calgary with AFK/Dialogue. He has worked on significant airport extensions in Melbourne and Sydney in Australia, Changi Airport in Singapore and was the lead designer for the façade of the Main Terminal Building of Helmut Jahn’s Suvarnabhumi Bangkok International Airport in Thailand.

Richard has worked on cultural facilities on six continents and such iconic buildings as the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center by Renzo Piano in Athens, Greece; the restoration of the Sydney Opera House; the Amazon Spheres with NBBJ; and, the refurbishment of the Seattle Space Needle with Olson Kundig.

Richard is the technical chair for the ASTM Structural Glass Committee and has an advisory role to Eurocode EC11. He is a member of the technical committee for the American glass standard ASTM E1300 and he was formally a member of the technical working group for Australian Standard AS1288, Glass in Buildings. Richard also represents the United States on International Organization for Standardization ISO (TC160) as an ‘Expert’ for matters regarding strength and use of architectural glass.

Richard is a Professional Engineer registered in the states of Washington, New York, Texas and Colorado USA and is a Chartered Professional Engineer in Australia, where he also is a Registered Building Practitioner in the State of Victoria. He has presented at many international conferences including giving keynote speeches for Glass Performance Days, Façade Techtonics and COST Structural Glass.

George Thomas serves as a Business Development Consultant for ClearVue Technologies based in Perth Australia. George is dedicated to seeking opportunities that elevate the sustainability profiles of ClearVue’s customers. With a recent Master’s degree in Sustainability from Harvard University, his primary focus lies in achieving carbon reductions on building facades, aligning with ClearVue’s mission to revolutionize sustainable building solutions. George’s previous role as a commercial solar originator he has significantly enriched his knowledge base, providing him with a deep understanding of diverse solar applications, thereby strengthening his capacity to drive impactful solutions in the renewable energy sector.

Dan Munn, P.E. is currently the Seattle Group Manager at TKDA, a full-service engineering firm committed to improving businesses and communities. With over 25 years of experience in engineering leadership and design of unique structures, Dan has been involved in design of well over 100 solar plants from traditional rooftops to some of the most unique façade applications for iconic buildings. Dan’s passion for sustainability and resiliency led him to work directly with Owners, Architects, and Design Build solar EPC contractors as a design lead for solar installations. Dan’s recent façade BIPV designs include a custom 6-megawatt tiled roof and façade system for a hi- tech client’s corporate headquarters, unique façade applied Solar PV systems for multiple NFL Stadiums and for the NBA’s Miami Heat, and a 6.4-megawatt rooftop solar system for the Mandalay Bay Resort and Conference Center in Las Vegas, which was the largest rooftop solar plant in the country at the time.

Gary Shaver is the President and Managing Director NA for Envelon Corporation with its office located in Edmonds, Washington. Envelon is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Grenzebach Envelon GmbH, a German manufacturer of architectural solar PV facades focused on the electrification of buildings, which in turn is part of the global Grenzebach Group, both of which are located in Bavaria, Germany.Gary has a multi-faceted background in the cleantech space, spanning innovative business and technology development, leadership of startups and turnarounds, and operations. His areas of experience include PV, BIPV, solar thermal, electrified transportation, and advanced material development from PV recycling. Gary is driven to develop and execute innovative climate solutions globally, which has given him experience in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America.

He has an undergraduate degree in Biology, Master of International Business , and a Juris Doctorate.

John MacKay is a detailed-oriented designer with a diverse collection of projects that span a variety of sectors such as residential, commercial, community, higher education, and infrastructure. Always focused on how a project might bring health and happiness to the owner, users, and community beyond, John is constantly thinking about a building’s performance, and how its design and material selections might contribute to a more energy-efficient structure. His technical knowledge of the construction process, diverse building techniques, and systems coordination plays a critical role in his work, setting the foundation for a project’s exterior skin strategies. John additionally co-leads the Miller Hull Mass Timber Lab, researching the technologies of this low-carbon material, and working with teams to study mass timber structural systems early in conceptual design. His contributions to the Deschutes Public Library, the UW-Madison Police Department, and the Health Sciences Building at the University of Washington have resulted in solutions that work from both a cost and climate perspective, increasing the feasibility and thus the accessibility of smart building enclosures.

Brad is a Principal with 4EA Building Science in Seattle. As an engineer and building scientist, Brad has been specializing in the design of high performance building enclosures for nearly two decades. Prior to joining 4EA Building Science in 2015, Brad was a Senior Engineer with Hoffmann Architects in New York City – working primarily on facades and enclosures. Throughout North America, Brad has consulted on a wide array of different project types and sectors, including high rises, healthcare facilities, cultural institutions, workspaces, affordable housing, and historic landmarks.

Chelsea Guenette is a project manager with PAE Consulting Engineers in Seattle. During the last eight years at PAE, she has designed HVAC systems on a variety of project types including higher education, laboratories, historic landmarks, K-12, healthcare, data centers, and commercial offices. Passionate about sustainable systems, Chelsea uses a holistic approach in her work, where analysis informs both architectural and mechanical design to meet high-performance goals. Prior to consulting, Chelsea received a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Montana State University. There she worked for five years in the HVAC research laboratory and completed her thesis on passive building technology.
