Once a neglected and contaminated landscape, the Calumet region was marred by years of industrial abuse and disinvestment. The area served as a dumping ground for slag and other toxic by products from steel mills, leaving it filled with poisons and devoid of life. In recent decades, concerted local efforts have reversed the trajectory of this region — delivering a remarkable ecological revival. Today, the 299 acre Big Marsh Park hosts diverse bird populations and offers numerous eco-recreational opportunities, with the 9,300 SF Ford Calumet Environmental Center at its center, serving as a community hub for the surrounding minority-majority neighborhoods.

The small facility’s facade is called on to perform numerous functions in support of the site, program, and philosophy at the park’s heart. These roles include everything from the prosaic necessities of security to optimizing the building’s impact on the surrounding bird sanctuary to the Center’s material as a metaphor for both the past and future of the region. Join VDT Principals Matt Gamache and Tom Daly as they discuss the innovative design solutions and technical intricacies that make the Ford Calumet Environmental Center a beacon of sustainable architecture and environmental stewardship. The presentation will focus on challenges and solutions related to sustainability, such as the first blackwater wetland permitted in Chicago, as well as features that contributed to a score of 4 out of 100 on LEED’s bird-safety scale (where 0 is best), including how the dynamic, kinetic facade even “winks” at the birds.

Humboldt Park Health Wellness Center will be a facility that will provide state-of-the-art services for campus patients and community members. This 45,500-square-foot wellness building will feature programs that promote healthy lifestyles, including a pool, indoor track, and multiple fitness areas. The three-story building will feature an iridescent blue and teal metal paneling facade and a glass curtain wall that is part of the master plan, which aims to transform a “transitional” neighborhood into a health-centered place that will significantly benefit the people of Humboldt Park.

The best tall buildings address the viewer through a range of contexts, from skyline to streetscape. This presentation will investigate the role of materiality in generating appeal, how common architectural materials are perceived both up close and from afar, and ultimately how designers can develop a compelling palette that balances expression, performance, and economy.

With the increasing complexity of enclosure design and highly varied materials, systems, and integrations, collaborations between the architect, engineers, general contractors, trades, and other stakeholders become challenging. Enabled by technology, new types of contracts, performance standards, and delivery methods, getting the whole team in synch is even more important and fraught than ever.

Join Chicago-area leaders in conversation on the lessons learned, challenges overcome, and trends impacting the AEC industry as we collaborate on increasingly complex projects.

Brian Abell, Jennifer Dempsey (Tod Williams, Billie Tsien Architects), and Travis Heim (Heintges) will present at The Obama Presidential Center.  The Center is designed as a campus integrated with the landscape, comprising a museum tower, forum building and library surrounding a public plaza. Each component is individually accessible on the plaza level, yet all are connected below grade.

The architecture embodies the symbolic nature of the Obama Presidency while serving the pragmatic functions of an active institution. The Center inspires local, national and international dialogue through its material presence, programs serving the community, and future role in Chicago’s South Side community.
