In 2018 the historic Chicago Tribune Tower was sold and converted into luxury real estate by Solomon Cordwell Buenz (SCB). Chris Pemberton, principal and CEO at SCB, and Steve Hubbard, associate principal will present the restoration of the tower’s historic stone edifice, which was thoroughly cleaned and repaired, as well as the building’s extensive structural reinforcement. Renovations were also performed on the Tribune’s former TV building including the implementation of four additional floors clad in glass curtain wall.

University of Chicago Medicine has commissioned CannonDesign to design a new facility for cancer research and treatment in Hyde Park. The project will feature an undulating glass curtain wall and consolidate the University’s cancer facilities which are currently spread out across the campus. The design team will describe the proposed implementation of the facade, focusing on the technical considerations related to shade and ventilation.

Heidi Trudell, a researcher, advocate, and bird-safe building consultant, will provide attendees with a crash course in bird-safe facade design. Trudell will explain the implications of Chicago’s new bird-safe ordinance which requires that new projects include measures to make the structure visible to migrating birds, such as ultraviolet patterning within glass. The new ordinance also requires that building owners turn off decorative light fixtures during periods of peak migration.

Studio Gang’s reimagining of the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts transforms decades of enclosure into a dynamic composition of lightness and transparency.  A stepping folded plate roof structure rises above a central axis that welcomes visitors to experience the museum as a continuum from south to north, anchored by soaring glass at both ends to merge the museum into the park and its community.  Angela Peckham, design management director at Studio Gang, and Matt Kuba, associate principal at Thornton Tomasetti, will share their journey in a series of images beginning with the earliest design thinking, progressing into an iterative detailing effort, and culminating in the collaborative fabrication and delivery of this project.

This spotlight covers two of Chicago’s most recently completed high-rise residential builds. Morris Adjmi’s Fulton Row tower utilizes a dark metal exoskeleton in a nod to Chicago’s rich industrial vernacular. Likewise, the Reed tower, as part of the Southbank riverfront masterplan, features a dark-gridded exterior reminiscent of previous additions to Chicago’s skyline. Presenters will discuss facade design as it relates to the residential high-rise typology, as well as efforts to situate new construction within a city’s existing context.

As we advance the high-performance qualities of buildings, we can achieve greater efficiencies with fully integrated or “blended” attributes of all systems including façade systems. Considering the life cycle approach to carbon, blended systems can yield both design and performance opportunities that shift the language of performance to the next generation of façade expression.

This roundtable session brings together sustainability thought-leaders from SOM and Goettsch Partners (GP) to speculate on the near-future of high-performance envelope design and the reduction of embodied carbon. Travis Soberg, principal and director of sustainability at GP, will begin the session by presenting embodied carbon-calculations performed on the firm’s recent projects. Next, Natalia Quintanilla, sustainability specialist at SOM, will speculate on the future of low-embodied-carbon facade design, drawing from the material research she has conducted for SOM.
