Allan Shulman is an architect, author, editor and curator. He also serves as a Professor at the University of Miami School of Architecture. Allan’s research focuses on themes of modernism, tropicality and urbanism. Published works include Building Bacardi: Architecture, Art and Identity, Miami Modern Metropolis: Paradise and Paradox in Midcentury Architecture and Planning; The Discipline of Nature: Architect Alfred Browning Parker in Florida; and as a co-author, The Making of Miami Beach: 1933-1942: The Architecture of Lawrence Murray Dixon; and Miami Architecture: An AIA Guide.

As an extension of his research, Allan founded Shulman + Associates in 1996 with a focus on the creation of relevant, site-specific designs. In this body of work, he has become a leader in forging a creative urban synthesis of preservation and innovation, and in developing new approaches to tropical architecture.

Under Allan’s design leadership, S+A projects have been widely recognized, with 90 design awards and publication internationally. Elevated to Fellowship in the AIA in 2008, Allan was awarded the AIA Miami Silver Medal for Design in 2010 and the AIA Florida Gold Medal in 2017.

Chris is a Product Manager at Kawneer, which pioneers architectural solutions to advance modern design with resilient, distinctive buildings that promote well-being. Before joining Kawneer, Chris spent ten years in engineering and product management roles within the infrastructure products industry. Chris applies his engineering experience to drive the delivery of technical solutions for the commercial construction markets. He received a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Clemson Univ. and is currently an M.B.A. candidate at Georgia Tech.

Julia Schimmelpenningh is the architectural technical engagement manager at Eastman, in Springfield, Massachusetts, a global specialty material and chemical company.

Her work includes new product development, qualification and commercialization of laminated glazing solutions, regulatory development and industry education and association support. Julia also manages the America’s Customer Applications and Support Laboratories in Springfield MA and Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Julia has been very active and solid contributor in the glazing industry for 30+ years and continues activities in ANSI, ASTM, CGSB, ISO, GICC, NGA and other organizations.

Schimmelpenningh served as president of the Glass Association of North America in 2005, and currently serves as chair of the ASTM committee on performance of buildings (E06) from which she has received several awards, the most recent being the E. George Stern award of excellence. She has also been chair of the committee on security systems and equipment (F12) and given the Award of Merit for her leadership, service, and technical expertise.

Tim Nass has nearly 30 years of experience in the architectural glazing industry. As the Vice President of Sales at SAFTI FIRST, leading USA-manufacturer of fire rated glass and framing systems, he brings his extensive knowledge and expertise when working closely with architects, consultants, general contractors and glaziers to deliver a code-compliant glazing solution that meets all the aesthetic, performance and budget requirements of the project. Tim also oversees SAFTI FIRST’s global network of architectural sales representatives.

Tim Nass is a dynamic presenter and speaker who has been delivering educational presentations to various architecture firms, AIA local chapters, CSI local chapters, at the CSI National Convention and other architectural and glazing industry events.

Mo has worked in the precast industry for nearly 20 years in a wide variety of positions including precast sales and marketing, estimating and project management. He has also been involved in several design-assist collaborations on large public and private projects. As marketing director, he is responsible for corporate communications as well as an education program for architects, owners and contractors regarding the unlimited options of using architectural and structural precast systems and the advancements made within the digital realm. His most recent speaking engagement was on the use of 3D printing within the precast industry and the workflow used to generate printed forms for use in prefabrication.

Darling is CEO and cofounder of The Architect’s Newspaper, celebrating its 20th year. The A|N media company consists of print and digital publications covering architecture and design news, as well as the Facades+ conferences. As A|N’s publisher, Darling won the AIA National Collaboration Award, Grassroots Preservation Award, and ASLA NY’s President’s Award. She began her publishing career as director of print production for The Gap’s European markets. She holds a BS from The University of Texas at Austin.
