The Amherst Science Center is a recent example of Payette’s groundbreaking work in the field of high-performance facade design with an emphasis on sustainability. This panel will discuss Payette’s first steps in approaching such projects, the tools at their disposal, and the key role collaborators such as Integral Group have in the successful design and completion of COTE-awarded projects. The presentation will be followed by a moderated discussion and an audience Q & A.

Andrea Love, AIA, LEED Fellow, as Director of Building Science at Payette, Love works across all projects to improve building performance. She was the Principal Investigator for the AIA Upjohn Grant on thermal bridging, and is a Lecturer at MIT Architecture. Love is a licensed architect with a BArch from Carnegie Mellon, and Masters in Building Technology from MIT and received the Tucker-Voss Award. She is a member of the COTE Advisory Group, and chairs the 2030 Working Group.

Jeffrey Abramson, AIA, LEED AP has vast knowledge in the design, analysis and detailing of highly complex envelope systems. His project experience includes double skin façades, unitized and stick built curtain wall, and sloped glazing systems for institutional clients such as the Harvard Art Museums, Amherst College and University of Massachusetts Medical School. Jeff is an instrumental contributor to Payette’s research work on thermal bridging and has presented the firm’s ongoing work both locally and at national conferences.

The panel, led by frequent collaborators Studio NYL and Sasaki, will be a deep-dive into the problem of thermal bridging. The panelists will present a particular thermal diagram with a run-through of how the detail is typically solved. The run-through of the detail will be followed by an review and analysis, and then extrapolated to other details and conditions.

Facade Design Director, Studio NYL, has designed and realized award-winning structural and skin projects that merge high performance, high design, and constructability. He is the current national Vice Chair for the Building Enclosure Council and AIA National’s representative on the ASHRAE 90.1 Envelope Subcommittee. Will is also on the ASTM Committee E06 on Performance of Buildings and is a developer and trainer for ASTM’s and NIBS’ new Building Enclosure Commissioning (BECx) certificate program. Will has presented at various AIA state and local events, CSI’s National CONSTRUCT Convention, BEST5, BEC-Colorado and BEC Minnesota events, and at multiple AIA National Conventions.

O’Hara is facade director for the Skins Group, a division of Studio NYL, established to provide full service facade design specializing in thermal modeling, moisture/condensation analysis, and in-depth detailing. Although Studio NYL is recognized for its skins work with cutting-edge glass and glazing, their team also specializes in digitally fabricated metal skins, GFRC, reinforced polymers, stone, ultra high performance concrete, terra cotta, and traditional precast. O’Hara is currently working on multiple projects in the Boston area.
