Serving the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, Silver Ramp is a multi-modal parking structure and transportation hub. The design team at Miller Dunwiddie will present the project’s innovative envelope which consists of thousands of colorfully-glazed terra-cotta fins and cover topics including installation and unitization of the terra-cotta “baguettes,” as well as the significant high-performance and sustainability metrics achieved.

10:15 AM - 10:55 AM
Ryan Rademacher, Director of Virtual Design & Construction at MG McGrath, will discuss the completion of the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Building for the Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester, Minnesota. The double-skin facade features a perforated exterior layer which covers a glass curtain wall beneath. The building will house facilities for high-tech biomedical research. Rademacher will discuss the project’s innovative approach to perforation and the minimal use of stiffeners despite the frequent use of curves in the building’s form.

11:20 - 11:45 AM
In this spotlight AWH Architects will present the adaptive reuse of The Guardian Building, a historic-romanesque structure in St. Paul, Minnesota. During the design process, the architects discovered that the original parapet had been removed from the structure. Working with cast stone instead of the brittle-red sandstone which was originally used for the facade, AWH architects recreated the parapet and along with its intricate ornamental details. The renovated building will house offices for a law firm which represents child-abuse victims as well as two non-profits, and will feature state-of-the-art biosolar technology on its roof.

11:45 AM - 12:30 PM
This roundtable with leading building materials manufacturers will discuss the advanced materials newly available and just around the corner. Learn how architects can work together with manufacturers to build with the latest, most up-to-date technologies and projects, and hear what’s next for the industry.

1:30 - 2:00 PM
Designed as a contemporary alternative to the granite facades of the city’s traditional civic architecture, the new Minneapolis Public Service Building features large spans of glass framed by aluminum panels. The transparency offered by the glazing is balanced by diagonally oriented aluminum fins, which provide the structure with strategic shading. Sara Rubenstein, principal at Henning Larsen, will discuss how the project responds to seasonal change, particularly the city’s cold and windy winters, as well as technical aspects concerning the facade’s detailing.

2:00 - 2:45 PM
As a significant driver of energy consumption and operational carbon, the building envelope is at the forefront of every green-building project. Led by local experts in the field, this roundtable will propose practical solutions for envelope efficiency which attendees will be able to implement in their own practice. Topics will include the use of high-performance cladding and alternative materials, advanced systems for temperature regulation, as well as strategies for sustainable sourcing.

3:15 - 4:00 PM
Join Alex Terzich and Nat Madison from HGA on an exploration of folded marble facades covering the sourcing, systems, and attachments need to work with the cladding material. The Capital One Hall’s lustrous exterior is punctuated with vertical windows carefully embedded in the folds of the building’s envelope. Inside, marble panels work to catch and reflect light in the public spaces and atrium.

The Family Tree Clinic provides reproductive health services to marginalized communities in Minneapolis. To ensure patient privacy, the design team at Perkins&Will chose to locate the entrance to the clinic under a sheltered alcove beneath the second story of the structure. Likewise, slim vertically-oriented windows were chosen for the ground floor instead of large horizontal glazing, reducing exposure while still providing the space with ample daylight. Lindsey Evenson, senior associate at Perkins&Will, will demonstrate how the attentive facade interventions work to protect patient confidentiality.
