Facades today express themselves in a dynamic way; architecturally through the spatial experience, culturally through image-making and technically through building performance. Join 3XN founder Kim Nielsen as he explores the cultural, technical and transformational power of performative facades.

Great architecture contributes to diverse metropolitan tapestry. In global cities like New York, London, Tokyo, a vast collection of styles and eras of buildings jostle and blend to form dynamic unities.
This panel brings together experts in contextual and bespoke design, Morris Adjmi of Morris Adjmi Architects and Vivian Lee of Woods Bagot, in a presentation and discussion of the steps required for successful project delivery in for New York City and beyond. Each will hone in on material selection and the maximization of design-assist capabilities to design unique projects that establish a presence amongst the crowd.

Sustainability goals are often thrown to the wayside in discussions of affordable housing, and are cast as an unnecessary expenditure on a tight budget. But what if both could go hand in hand? This panel will dive into three projects, 425 Grand Concourse, Sendero Verde in East Harlem, and the Pirelli Building that set a high benchmark for what can be achieved in scaled up Passive House design. The panel will include industry leaders Gary Handel, William Zoefller and Lois Arena of Steven Winter Associates, and John Woefling of Dattner Architects.

Change and the Scale of Design

Tight site constraints and the zoning code present challenges and opportunities for building form and facade design. With the proper design methodologies, firms can harness these constraints to establish eye-catching forms and occupant-friendly plans. This panel will examine two such projects, ARO by CetraRuddy and engineer Hatfield Group; and 77 Greenwich by FX Collaborative and engineer Thornton Tomasetti.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission and other heritage flagbearers are a tough crowd to please, especially when it comes to the insertion of contemporary design and infrastructure within historic buildings. However, there are paths available for architects to undertake such daunting projects and they often rely on sleight of hand and out-of-the-box thinking. Two such case studies, 10 Jay Street by ODA and the Tammany Hall restoration led by BKSK Architects, fall in this category and provide distinct roadmaps to navigate a field of much complexity within the industry.
