Facades
June 24, 2021

This June The Architect’s Newspaper will present Multi-Material Enclosures & Ventilated Facades.
The conference, our first of the summer, is grounded in the city of Atlanta, and is co-chaired by HKS Director of Commercial, Atlanta, Shelby Morris. Although the Peach State will feature prominently within the program, the conference’s three panels will be relevant for the entire Southeast, and beyond. The topics respond to architecture’s increasing responsibility to address environmental and cladding conditions, all while maintaining aesthetic standards for both the client and general public. In particular, the panels will hone in on construction related to the exponentially expanding tech scene in Atlanta, innovative multi-material enclosures, and operable windows for facades. Attendees will be provided the opportunity to converse directly with the panelists throughout the day.

In the past two months, the tech behemoths Airbnb and Microsoft announced substantial expansions in the city of Atlanta. They are not alone, and it is no coincidence that the city continues to grow as an East Coast tech hub with an abundant skilled workforce and economic incentives. Companies are treating such expansions as flagships and are investing heavily in the facades of the new developments to establish an area-wide presence. This panel will examine how architects can harness the incredible potential of this trend and gear their buildings to the specifications of such particular clients.

The proliferation of advanced engineering and fabrication techniques is pushing the limits of facade design, specifically that of multi-material enclosures. This panel will feature Niel Prunier and Manzer Mirkar from HKS, and Dave Powell and Chris Davis from Hastings Architecture, who will explore the unique technical challenges and methods for designing and constructing large scale projects that use multiple cladding techniques or multiple interfaces. The projects they will present, Sofi Stadium in Los Angeles and the Bridge Building in Nashville, offer an opportunity to examine these techniques at different scales and place them in conversation. Such projects are increasingly prescient today with new standards for contemporary outdoor capacity demands and the call for materiality to speak to its contextual site.

Olson Kundig and Miller Hull will dive deep into their respective projects, 760 Ralph McGill and Georgia Tech’s Kendeda building, to showcase how their envelope design addressed the incredibly complex and multifaceted project conditions. 760 Ralph McGill is a mixed-use goliath situated in between the Eastside Trail and Historic Fourth Ward Park of Atlanta. Kendeda is the first academic and research building in the Southeast to pursue Living Building Challenge 3.1 certification – the world’s most ambitious green building program. While vastly different in program and scale, these two projects utilize facade design to achieve well-tempered environments for the challenging conditions of Atlanta using innovative methodologies.
