Sam Maleknia

Senior Urban Design Planner

Sam is an architect and urban designer with 19 years of experience shaping cities through both public and private sector work. His diverse portfolio includes complex high-density developments, transit-oriented communities, large-scale master plans, and strategic urban design and planning. Since 2018, he has played a key role at the City of Surrey, advancing high-rise development in the city’s rapidly evolving urban core.

Sam has lived and contributed to projects across Canada, the United States, and the Middle East, including work in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, and Kuwait, bringing a global perspective to every project he touches.

A strong advocate for livable density, Sam has participated in a range of design competitions focused on high-rises and missing middle housing. He has served as a juror for Urbanarium’s Decoding Density, acted as a guest critic at UBC and SFU, and lectured at the School of Architecture at Kuwait University from 2009 to 2011.

At the heart of Sam’s work is a commitment to designing high-density communities that are inviting, vibrant, distinctive, and genuinely livable.
