John MacKay
Senior Associate
John MacKay is a detailed-oriented designer with a diverse collection of projects that span a variety of sectors such as residential, commercial, community, higher education, and infrastructure. Always focused on how a project might bring health and happiness to the owner, users, and community beyond, John is constantly thinking about a building’s performance, and how its design and material selections might contribute to a more energy-efficient structure. His technical knowledge of the construction process, diverse building techniques, and systems coordination plays a critical role in his work, setting the foundation for a project’s exterior skin strategies. John additionally co-leads the Miller Hull Mass Timber Lab, researching the technologies of this low-carbon material, and working with teams to study mass timber structural systems early in conceptual design. His contributions to the Deschutes Public Library, the UW-Madison Police Department, and the Health Sciences Building at the University of Washington have resulted in solutions that work from both a cost and climate perspective, increasing the feasibility and thus the accessibility of smart building enclosures.
