León Fernandez
Senior Computational Designer
León Fernandez is an industrial designer with a passion for Algorithm Aided Design. He has a wealth of experience in the field, having led a Design Office that focused on implementing digital fabrication methods for architectural elements and product development.
He joined Kinetica’s Computational Design team and participated in several high-profile projects in the US before being appointed as lead designer for the Expo Dubai 2020 project.
One of the key features of the Dubai Expo 2020 main pavilion was the use of laser projectors to create the largest immersive experience in the world. Fernandez was instrumental in the development of this aspect of the project, using his expertise to lead the design and fabrication teams for the development of the laser projectors’ enclosures; a set of turbine-like pods, with a double curvature shell, fabricated in Aluminum and a complex array of mechanisms and systems that allow for the proper operation of the laser projectors. The project was widely recognized for its innovative use of technology.
More recently, Leon has been involved in a multi-awarded Houston Endowment Headquarters project, where he led the fabrication team for the facade and canopy louvers development, two of the key elements that give the building it’s iconic look.
